Experienced Buffalo Dentist Explains The Denture Process

How Do I Know If I Need A Denture?

If you think you may need dentures, the first step is to schedule a checkup with your dentist. If your teeth are severely affected by periodontal disease or extensive decay, dentures might be a suitable option. However, our priority is always to save teeth whenever possible before considering dentures or other appliances.

There are two main types of dentures: those with metal frames and those without. Non-metal dentures can offer a more natural, cosmetic appearance, while metal-framed dentures are often more durable. Generally, the process of getting dentures involves minimal pain. If teeth need to be extracted before fitting the denture, some soreness may occur, but otherwise, there is typically only minor discomfort. If your new dentures cause sore spots, your dentist will adjust the fit to relieve the discomfort. Issues like ill-fitting dentures can be quickly diagnosed and corrected using our state-of-the-art 3D panoramic X-ray machine.

In some cases, dentures can be inserted immediately after the removal of diseased teeth; this is known as an immediate denture. However, as your mouth heals and tissues shrink, these immediate dentures will need to be relined or replaced to ensure a proper fit as you adjust to them.

How To Care For Your Denture

Brushing a denture is not recommended. Instead, most pharmacies offer over-the-counter solutions for cleaning dentures through overnight soaking. It’s also advisable to remove your dentures before sleeping, as this allows the dentures to soak in the cleaning solution, effectively removing plaque and bacteria. Additionally, your oral tissues benefit from being exposed to air overnight.

Whether you can eat normally with dentures depends on their fit and the amount of bone ridge in your mouth. While chewing may not be as efficient as with natural teeth, properly fitted dentures generally provide stability and function similar to your original teeth. Our goal is always to save natural teeth when possible, but dentures are an effective solution for those who need them. If you notice your dentures becoming loose or experience difficulty eating or speaking, it may be time for a reline to adjust their fit.
